Osha root is widely used in Native American cultures in the mountains of Western America where it grows. Traditionally this root is used as support for the respiratory system. It is known as Bear Root. ‘Osha’ is Native American word for bear, as bears would dig it up and eat the roots for what appeared to be medicinal purposes. They would also rub some of the strong-smelling plant on their fur to treat wounds and protect against insects. It has a sharp, intense aromatic quality resembling strong celery.
